Castells: A Celebration of Unity
In the heart of Catalonia, the tradition of building human towers—known as castells—stands as a living testament to collective strength, balance, and resilience. Originating in the 18th century in the town of Valls, these awe-inspiring towers are more than feats of physical coordination—they are profound expressions of community spirit. This series, photographed in 2024 at the Concurs de Castells in Tarragona, captures the emotional depth and visual poetry of this centuries-old tradition. What struck me most was not just the spectacle, but the people: all ages, all shapes and sizes, coming together in trust and harmony. From the solid base (pinya) to the tiny child who climbs to the summit (enxaneta), every role matters—and every body belongs. The castells are now recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Through this work, I wanted to honour the beautiful choreography of the towers—but more importantly, to share the deeply human story beneath them. A story of interdependence, courage, and the quiet power of working together. Al cor de Catalunya, la tradició de construir castells es manté com una mostra viva de força col·lectiva, equilibri i resistència. Originats al segle XVIII a la vila de Valls, aquests impressionants castells són molt més que gestes físiques: són una expressió profunda de l’esperit comunitari. Aquesta sèrie, fotografiada el 2024 al Concurs de Castells de Tarragona, captura la profunditat emocional i la poesia visual d’aquesta tradició ancestral. El que més em va colpir no va ser només l’espectacle, sinó la gent: totes les edats, totes les formes i mides, unint-se amb confiança i harmonia. Des de la pinya sòlida fins a l’enxaneta que corona el castell, cada paper importa—i cada cos té el seu lloc. Els castells han estat reconeguts per la UNESCO com a Patrimoni Cultural Immaterial de la Humanitat. Amb aquest treball, he volgut retre homenatge a la coreografia bella d’aquests castells—però, sobretot, compartir la història profundament humana que hi ha al darrere. Una història d’interdependència, coratge i el poder silenciós de treballar plegats.
